This page lists all of the settings available in Brawlhalla.

Generic Settings

The following settings are generic and do not need much explanation:

  • Music Volume
  • Sound Volume
  • Display Mode (Fullscreen, Maximized, or Windowed - PC only)
  • Controls
  • Language

All of these other than Language can be configured on pause menu during matches.

Preferences

Preferences affect the main game's behavior. They can be configured on the main menu.

Player Names

This changes how players' names are displayed in-game.

  • All - Show names above all players and in the HUD.
  • Only you - Show name only above your head, and for everyone in the HUD.
  • Your team - Show name above you and your team members' heads, and for everyone in the HUD.
  • Never - Do not show player names above heads or in HUD.
  • HUD Only - Do not show player name above heads, but show for everyone in HUD.

Names are displayed as the first 3 letters of the player's username. There are some special cases for what 3 letters will show above your head or in the HUD:

  • In local matches, players will be labeled as P1, P2, P3... etc.
  • Bots will be labeled CPU, CP2, CP3... etc.
  • If your name starts with "The" or has the character "|" in it, the first 3 letters after that will be used.
  • Non-alphanumeric characters in a name are skipped over (i.e. anything other than letters and numbers).

Regardless of the option set, pressing the "Show Names" button in-game will show the full names of players over their heads.

Team Icons

This changes the arrow that appears above players' heads.

  • All - Show arrows above all players' heads.
  • Only you - Show an arrow only above your head.
  • Your team - Show an arrow above you and your team members' heads.
  • Mixed - Show an arrow above all players' heads, but in team modes show an arrow above Team 1's heads, and a circle above the Team 2's heads.
  • Damage - The same as Mixed, but the color of each player's icon is their current damage color.
  • Never - Do not show an arrow above anyone's head.

In team modes, the arrow above player heads will match the color of the team they're on.

Collapse Crossovers

This changes how Crossover Skins are viewed in the character select menu.

  • Yes - Crossovers can only be selected as skins from the original Legend, and will change the Legend's icon.
  • No - Crossovers will have separate roster listings. They can still be selected as skins from the original Legend, but will not change the icon. Skins can not be selected for the crossovers unless they have multiple styles, such as Lara Croft and Eivor.

Additionally, when enabled the Crossover icon will show the original Legend in the corner, and when disabled will instead have an icon representing what series the Crossover is from.

Collapse Upgrades

This changes how Progression Skins are viewed when changing a Legend's skin.

  • Yes - Only the highest unlocked level of a progression skin can be selected.
  • No - All unlocked levels of a progression skin can be selected.

Camera Mode

This changes how the camera acts during gameplay.

  • Default - Identical to Classic. This is selected by default on PC, and is not present on some consoles.
  • Action - Similar to Classic, except the camera zooms in slightly closer when players are close, and there is more screen shake on impact.
  • Classic - The camera moves to ensure all players and weapon throws are always visible. When a weapon or item spawns, the camera will shift to show it for a few seconds, then ignore it. The camera won't zoom any further in when players are at a medium distance away from each other. There is also slight screen shake when players take damage.
  • Fixed - The camera stays zoomed out to show the entire map and does not move.
  • Close - The camera zooms in extremely close when players are close together. It also does not follow weapon throws or item spawns, instead showing an off-screen indicator when a weapon or item spawns. This is selected by default on mobile and console.

The Default camera option was labeled as a "temporary option" when camera modes were added, and seems to have never been changed, making it redundant as it just uses the Classic camera settings.

On the Nintendo Switch version of the game, there is an additional setting tab for Handheld Camera - this allows you to have a separate camera option when playing handheld compared to docked.

Stock Mode Timer

This changes how the timer is shown in the Stock gamemode.

  • Always show - The timer will always show in the top right corner.
  • Show at 1 minute - The timer will only show when one minute is remaining.

Background Options

This changes how Map backgrounds are viewed in-game.

  • Default - All maps backgrounds have full effects, including animations for eligible maps.
  • Simple Backgrounds - Maps with animated backgrounds will no longer have animated effects.
  • Blur Background Low - Map backgrounds have a very light blur applied to them.
  • Blur Background Med - Map backgrounds have a medium blur applied, more visibly than low.
  • Blur Background High - Map backgrounds have a very strong blur applied, making backgrounds noticeably unfocused.

These options were added to distinguish players from the background, which can help players who find themselves losing track of their positioning.

Waiting Room

This changes the match used while waiting for a match to start.

  • Bot Match - places the player in a match that immediately starts with 3 bots and many weapons/gadgets already spawned.
  • Training mode - places the player in a Training match. This has all the features of standard training mode other than Catch Bombs Training.

System Settings

System Settings affect features outside of regular matches. They include most of the generic settings and the following:

Chat Visibility

This setting is only on PC, and changes how the in-game chat is seen.

  • All - The chat will show on the main menu and lobbies.
  • Friends + Clanmates - The chat will still show on the main menu and lobbies, but you can only see messages from friends and clanmates.
  • None - The chat is always hidden.

Outdated Replays

This setting is only on PC, and changes how replays from previous game versions are kept.

  • Keep - All replays are kept, regardless of version.
  • Delete - Replays from previous versions are deleted the next time the Replays tab is opened.

This option exists as Replays from older versions can't be played on the current version.

Menu Graphics

This setting is only on mobile, and changes the quality of graphics in menus.

  • Quality - Menu graphics display at their intended higher quality.
  • Performance - Menu graphics display at lower quality, intended to boost performance on older devices.

Spectate Delay

This setting allows players to change the delay when spectating a match to reduce the effect of delay and dropped packets.

  • Quality - Prioritizes smooth gameplay by delaying the spectator by 2000 ms from the live game, and discarding the first 1000 ms of the match.
  • Speed - Prioritizes low delay that's closer to the live game by delaying the spectator by 500 ms from the live game, and discarding the first 500 ms of the match.
  • Custom - Only available to PC players, and is only visible (and automatically used) when the -spectatedelay launch option is set. The delay and discard parameters can be any non-zero integer.

Streamer Mode

This setting allows users to turn off copyrighted in-game music. Currently it only affects Theed Power Generator; when enabled, the map will use Mustafar's music instead.

Region Settings

Region settings can be selected from the main menu, where you can chose from a map which region to queue in.

In the right corner of the region settings menu is the "Add Servers" button. This allows you to enable other regions from a premade list to use as fallback servers (this can help reduce queue time). These fallbacks servers are usually disabled by default, except when setting your region to US East or US West.

Game Rules

Settings GameRules.png

Game Rules are settings that can be changed in Custom Online and Couch Party lobbies.

The following game rules can be changed by the lobby owner:

  • The gamemode being played
  • Turning teams on or off
  • Turning team damage on or off
  • The amount of lives/score to win
  • Match time
  • Changing the damage percentage
  • Turning specific gadgets (or all gadgets) on or off
  • Turning test features and test maps on or off
  • Change the Map Set
  • Changing the maximum amount of players

Some gamemodes have different restrictions on the settings, such as gamemodes that are team-only.

In Couch Party, the match time can be set to infinity, while Custom Online matches always must have a set match time.

Lobby Settings

Settings Lobby.png

In the same menu as game rules, the lobby settings for a Custom Online, Couch Party, or Matchmaking lobby can be changed.

Matchmaking lobbies have limited settings, only being able to change the matchmaking mode, privacy, and select a single banned map.

The following settings can be changed in Custom Online lobbies:

Privacy

The lobby privacy can be set to either Private or Public.

Private lobby owners can enable or disable the following people from joining: Friends, Clanmates, or by Room Number.

Public lobbies can be entered by anyone through the custom game browser. If the lobby owner is account level 15 or higher, they can set a description that will show on the browser.

Map Choosing

This changes how maps are selected.

  • Voting - Players vote for the map they want. If multiple maps are selected, one of the selected maps will be chosen at random. This vote lasts 10 seconds.
  • Turns Striking - Players take turns striking out the maps they do NOT want to play on, and the last map remaining is selected for play. The striking phase lasts for 60 seconds.
  • Snake Striking - Same as Turns Striking, but players get to strike out 2 maps before the next player's turn.
  • Open Striking - Same as Turns Striking, but players do not need to wait each others turn to strike out a map.
  • Tournament Striking - A player strikes until only 3 maps remain. Then, the other player/team strikes out from the remaining 3 maps. As per the Brawlhalla Esports Rulebook, the game hints that the loser of the last of the last match should be the first player/team to strike, but this is not strictly enforced by the game. The striking phase lasts for 60 seconds.
  • Leader Chooses - The leader of the lobby chooses the map to be played on. 60 seconds are given to the leader to make a selection.
  • Random - The map is selected at random.

All of the striking map votes last 60 seconds, and if the striking is not completed in that time, the map is selected at random from the remaining un-striked maps. There is also the option "Done" in these votes (other than Tournament Striking) which stops your striking votes early.

In Open Striking and for the last person striking in Tournament Striking, there is also the option "Strike Others," which strikes all maps other than the one you have selected.

Blind Pick

With blind pick enabled, players will not see their opponents' selected Legend until the match starts.

Allow Handicaps

Handicaps are per-player settings that can be modified to give someone an advantage or disadvantage over their opponents.

The following handicaps can be toggled:

  • Lives (1 - 99)
  • Damage Done (50% - 300%)
  • Damage Taken (50% - 300%)

All active handicaps show under each player's name when enabled.

Presets

Two presets can also be selected from the Lobby Settings menu:

  • Tournament 1v1 - 3 lives stock match with Tournament 1v1 map set and Tournament Striking map choosing.
  • Tournament 2v2 - 3 lives teams stock match with Tournament 2v2 map set and Tournament Striking map choosing.

With either of these presets enabled, Bots are not allowed to be put into the match. Additionally, if playing in a Custom Online lobby on PC, Easy Anti-Cheat must be enabled to play with either preset.

Training Settings

In Training Mode, settings for both the player and the dummy bot can be extensively configured to help players practice. See Player Settings and Bot Settings on the Training page for a full list of settings.
